{"id":476,"date":"2026-04-27T17:33:05","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T16:33:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/housing-rights.info\/news\/?p=476"},"modified":"2026-04-27T17:33:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T16:33:06","slug":"more-news-items-and-new-guides-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/housing-rights.info\/news\/more-news-items-and-new-guides-3\/","title":{"rendered":"More news items and new guides\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">eVisa\u00a0judicial review dismissed but court acknowledges real hardship from digital-only status\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Computer Weekly\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/366640791\/High-Court-dismisses-judicial-review-against-eVisa-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that the High Court dismissed the judicial review challenge to the Home Office\u2019s\u00a0eVisa\u00a0policy in\u00a0<em>BSC &amp; Anor v The Secretary of State for the Home Department<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bailii.org\/ew\/cases\/EWHC\/Admin\/2026\/705.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">[2026] EWHC 705 (Admin)<\/a>. However, the judge recognised that the\u00a0eVisa\u00a0system has caused real hardship to a lot of people through no fault of their own. Over 81,000 genuine errors were reported between April and October 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite this, it was held the policy was not irrational because the Home Office is actively taking measures to improve the system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Computer Weekly&nbsp;<\/em>includes comments on the case from the3million and from the Migrant Rights Network.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Life story work\u2019 with refugee and asylum-seeking children and young people\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The East of England Strategic Migration Partnership reports that Children and Families Across Borders in partnership with Blue Cabin and Therapeutic Life Story Work International have created a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfab.org.uk\/project\/family-reunification-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">family of new resources<\/a>\u00a0to support life story work with refugee and asylum-seeking children and young people. The free resources are designed to provide guidance in an area where\u00a0very little\u00a0is currently available.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">English conversation groups for migrants\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Refugee Migrant Centre&nbsp;(RMC) in Wolverhampton has created friendly conversation groups across the West Midlands to help resettled communities build confidence in spoken English while connecting with people from&nbsp;different cultures. Supported by trained staff and volunteers, participants will practise speaking,&nbsp;listening&nbsp;and meeting new people in a safe, welcoming space.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project will also introduce learners to other local services, further learning&nbsp;opportunities&nbsp;and useful digital tools to help them continue improving their English and feel more at home in the region.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Get in touch with\u00a0the RMC\u2019s\u00a0Steven Bayliss at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:steven@rmcentre.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">steven@rmcentre.org.uk<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Anti-discrimination provisions become law in England on\u00a01\u00a0May\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anti-discrimination provisions in the Renters\u2019 Rights Act that take effect in May will make it unlawful for landlords and agents to have blanket bans on letting to tenants who have children or are in receipt of&nbsp;benefits&nbsp;or&nbsp;directly or indirectly discriminate against them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Landlords will also need to consider all tenants when making&nbsp;lettings and&nbsp;are not&nbsp;permitted&nbsp;to turn down tenants&nbsp;on the basis of&nbsp;affordability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These provisions apply to \u2018relevant tenancies\u2019 under the Renters\u2019 Rights Act,&nbsp;which are assured tenancies (governed by the Housing Act 1988) and regulated tenancies (older tenancies governed by the Rent Act 1977).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/renting-out-your-property-guidance-for-landlords-and-letting-agents\/rental-discrimination-a-guide-for-landlords\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Government guidance for landlords<\/a>\u202fhas examples of behaviour that might amount to rental discrimination.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government has also issued a new code on discrimination relating to\u00a0\u2018right to rent\u2019\u00a0checks. There is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/right-to-rent-draft-code-of-practice-for-landlords-avoiding-unlawful-discrimination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">consultation<\/a>\u00a0on the draft code, but it closes on April 29.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New briefings and guides\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Right to Remain\u00a0\u2014 staying safe advice.\u00a0<\/strong>Right to Remain have produced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/righttoremain.org.uk\/safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">guidance and a flier<\/a>\u00a0on staying safe against the threat of far-right violence.
